Election Year Riddle

With all the talk about the Republicans possibly stealing the presidential election (and possibly the congressional elections as well) through an assortment of dirty tricks, I offer this riddle about spoiler candidates. It's multiple choice, so read it carefully!
On August 26, 1967, John Anderson and Ralph Nader are in a canoe, paddling across the Mississippi River at five miles an hour. Meanwhile, George Wallace, Pat Buchanan, and Ross Perot are in a speedboat cruising down the Mississippi at seventy miles an hour. If the speedboat crashes into the canoe, killing everyone in each craft, which future presidential candidate will still lose an election?

A) Hubert H. Humphrey in 1968
B) Jimmy Carter in 1980
C) George H.W. Bush in 1992
D) Albert Gore in 2000

Give up?

The answer is D. Since Al Gore carried Florida in the election of 2000 and thus won the Presidency, and since a proper recount would have shown this if goon squads hadn't been sent by Tom DeLay to intimidate vote tabulators in Miami and if the Supreme Court hadn't halted all recounts and handed the election to George W. Bush, and since the Republicans were intent on stealing the election one way or another (with Florida providing them the perfect opportunity for them to do so), Gore would still lose the 2000 election. As everyone knows, Ralph Nader's place on the Florida ballot had nothing to do with Gore's loss.
