I announced a surprise in my previous post. Well, it's not really that big of a surprise.
As of tomorrow - which, by the way, will include another record review - this blog will have a new name. It will simply be called "Miscellaneous Musings." I'm taking my name out of the title because it's a little unwieldy and cumbersome. Besides, everyone who reads this blog knows who I am anyway. But I'm going to put my name in the description, so newcomers to this blog will know who I am.
My mother wants to know why I would put my real name - yes, "Maginnis" is a real name, it's not made up - on a blog and disregard my own privacy. Well, I actually got the idea to go by my own name from Jimmy Guterman, a former rock critic who has since gone on to work in consulting and freelance writing. (A link to his site is included on this blog.) His old Blogger.com blog was called "Quantity Over Quality: Jimmy Guterman's Blog," and I sort of modeled my blog after his (he has a new blog, also self-titled, on WordPress now) before I found my own voice.
Jimmy and I used to go back and forth on rock and roll on a message board he managed (our biggest disagreement - he hates Crosby Stills and Nash, I love 'em) along with several other guys. It seemed like a good idea at the time - and it still does - to use my own name rather than hide behind a silly Internet pseudonym. It's all about promoting oneself as a writer.
Right, I've bored you enough. Back tomorrow. And I might still have a surprise . . ..

Real names are common now. Hiding under make believe names was yesterday's Internet.
It is better to use your real name to brand yourself as a writer.
My mother is still paranoid about me using my own name. She's afraid I'm going to tick off the wrong person.
