Rosa Parks, the black woman who courageously refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955, died last night at 92. Several tasteful obituaries were offered, but at least one of them had to center on the first person. Kwame Kilpatrick, the mayor of Detroit (where Mrs. Parks had lived since 1957), declared, "I'm standing here today because of her." Uh, Mr. Mayor? You're standing where you are today because you're the mayor of an overwhelmingly black city in the most segregated metropolitan area in America! One other thing - the fact that your mother represents part of your city in the U.S. House of Representatives probably helped you get your job too. Get real, man.
