Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, is dead. He was killed earlier in an air raid coordinated by U.S. and Iraqi forces. This is the most significant news in the larger war against al Qaeda short of getting Osama bin Laden. Zarqawi had been responsible for the deaths of many American servicemen and Iraqi civilians.
This is only a temporary setback for bin Laden's organization. Although they've lost a bold leader and tactician, al-Qaeda is very good at filling a major void. Also, the violence in Iraq will continue one way or another, so the problems in Iraq aren't going to be solved overnight - although the final approval of the defense, national security, and interior ministers appointed for the Iraqi cabinet sure does help.
