Katie Couric was given a long sendoff from "Today" on Wednesday, her last day with that show; she begins her stint as the CBS News evening anchor in September. The show was three hours long instead of the usual two. I don't think a broadcast ever lasted so long. . . so long. . . so long. . . . So long already, Katie!
Katie Couric has been underestimated by her critics. Labelled a"$60 million media whore" by writer James Howard Kunstler for her cutesy-pie infotainment image, Couric has been known to dish out tough interview questions to "Today" guests who expect a friendly tea parlor-style talk. . . and get caught off their respective guards. Still, due to Katie's essentially sweet disposition and her penchant for theatrics - the on-air colonoscopy, dressing as Donald Trump to interview a dismissed "Apprentice" contestant - this hardly makes for a promising start to her CBS career. But then, even Walter Cronkite had to host the occasional fluff show in the fifties.
To be honest, I laughed when I first heard the rumors of Katie Couric going over to CBS to take over for Bob Schieffer. Some people might similarly feel a desire to chuckle at the idea of Hillary Clinton being nominated by the Democrats to run for President in 2008 - which could result in either America staying on the Bush-Clinton double helix of presidential leadership or the handover of the White House to Mitt Romney or George Allen.
Couric's new job provides a warning to those who feel like laughing at Hillary. . . . Don't laugh.
