In a story that could be the high-tech equivalent of released African bees in Brazil, someone brought home a laptop computer, fill of identity data from thousands of veterans, from his Veterans Affairs Department job to do some overtime work in the comfort of his own house, and the computer was stolen. Now the identities of thousands of old servicemen could be used to commit identity theft and credit card fraud. Among other unsavory acts.
It really amazes me the way we treat our war veterans. By contrast, consider the way Sweden treats their war vet. . . . Oh wait, that's right, Sweden doesn't have any living war vets because they haven't fought a war since 1814! (An example we could learn from, but that's a different issue.) Anyway, anyone who has formerly served in the Swedish defense forces probably puts up with far less guff from Stockholm than our vets do. The old Veterans Administration was made into a full Cabinet department in 1988, and it still doesn't work right! :-O
